Which lakes can we visit near Tahoe River Cabin?
There are more than seven lakes and reservoirs to explore nearby. South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe’s South Shore are approximately 25–30 minutes away in normal driving conditions. Lakeview Commons is one convenient spot to reach the lake.
Other lake destinations within roughly 10–45 minutes, depending on the access point and road conditions, include Red Lake, Caples Lake, Woods Lake, Indian Creek Reservoir, Lower Echo Lake, Silver Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Upper and Lower Blue Lake. These estimates assume roads are open and snow-free; summer traffic and parking can add time.
Burnside Lake is another nearby option reached by a forest road. Twin Lake and Meadow Lake, near Blue Lakes, involve rougher roads; a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle may be needed, and reaching Meadow Lake also involves a short walk. Heenan Lake is another nearby destination, with special seasonal fishing rules. Lower Bear River Reservoir is a longer outing—allow approximately 50–60 minutes for the drive.
For a lake hike, consider Frog Lake, Winnemucca Lake, Round Top Lake or Upper Echo Lake. Allow time for hiking in addition to the drive to the trailhead. Mountain access is seasonal, so check current road, trail and fishing conditions before heading out.
Do I need a fishing license to fish in the river behind the cabin?
Yes—anglers 16 and older generally need a valid California sport fishing license to fish in the Carson River behind the cabin. Children under 16 do not need a sport fishing license. Check California’s license information and the current fishing regulations, including seasons, catch limits and tackle rules, before fishing.
You can buy a license at Markleeville General Store, the historic red building in downtown Markleeville, at 14799 Highway 89. The store also carries bait, fishing rods and other fishing gear. Call 530-694-2448 to confirm current hours and supplies before visiting. Licenses can also be purchased online through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The cabin includes a kitchen, Starlink Wi-Fi, a washer and dryer, a living-room TV, a wood stove, room heaters, an outdoor gas grill and a deck with outdoor seating. A riverside hammock and mountain views add to the setting. Browse cabin photos before your stay.
Is there a barbecue grill, and is propane provided?
Yes! There is a gas barbecue grill on the deck facing the river, so you can enjoy views of the Carson River and surrounding mountains while you grill. Propane is provided, and we usually keep two propane tanks at the cabin so there is a spare if one runs low.
